Sawan 2024 history and significance:

The history of Sawan is related to the Samudra Manthan in Indian mythology, when the Gods and Demons gathered for the purpose of obtaining Amrit (nectar). Many things like ornaments, animals, Goddess Lakshmi, and Dhanvantri were obtained during the Samudra manthan. However, a deadly poison called Halahal also came out, which led to chaos.

Anyone who came in contact with the poison began to perish. To deal with this situation, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu requested Lord Shiva to drink this poison and tolerate it. When Lord Shiva drank the poison, his body turned blue. Goddess Parvati worried that the poison might spread to his body, so using her powers she restricted the poison to spread in lord Shiva’s body. This incident led to Lord Shiva being called Neelkanth.

Due to these incidents, worshiping Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati every Monday in the month of Sawan has special significance. The month of Sawan is considered auspicious in Hinduism because various important festivals are celebrated during this time. According to the Drik Panchang, festivals and fasts such as Kamika Ekadashi, Mangala Gauri Vrat, Hariyali Teej, Nag Panchami, Raksha Bandhan, Narali Purnima, and Kalki Jayanti occur during this time. Devotees of Shiva also go on Kanwar Yatra and visit holy places to offer Gangajal to Lord Shiva.
